Previously, Legacy Minecraft accounts were migrated to Mojang accounts. This page has information relating to that previous migration that started in 2012. This is unrelated to the new migration from Mojang accounts to Microsoft accounts. For information about the current Microsoft account migration, see our Microsoft Migration FAQ.
IMPORTANT: We have not started migrating any Legacy Minecraft accounts to Microsoft accounts yet. We'll let you know in the Minecraft Launcher when your account is ready to be migrated.
Never enter your account information on any third-party websites.
Migrating from a Legacy Minecraft account to a Mojang Account
If you log in with your email address, you already have a Mojang account and do not need to migrate a legacy account.
Mojang accounts are the next step for Minecraft accounts and are your single sign-in resource for all Mojang games. If you log into Minecraft with your username, you can migrate your game to a Mojang account at account.mojang.com/migrate.
What are the benefits of migrating a Minecraft account to a Mojang account?
- Ability to change your email address and Minecraft username
- All of your Mojang games in one place
- Use your Minecraft username for other Mojang games
- More account security, such as security questions
- Access to Minecraft Realms
- Ability to change your Minecraft skin and cape at Minecraft.net
What changes if I migrate to a Mojang account?
If you migrate a Minecraft account to a Mojang account, you'll now use your email to sign into all Mojang Studios services, including Minecraft and Minecraft.net. Minecraft will become a game profile on your Mojang account, similar to a Scrolls or Cobalt game profile.
I already log in with my email address but haven't migrated. What's that about?
If you log in with your email address, that means your account is already a Mojang account. Mojang accounts were introduced in late 2012, so if you created an account after that time, you automatically have a Mojang account, and you don't need to migrate.
If you have any trouble migrating, visit our article on Account Migration Issues for more information.
Legacy Account Migration Issues
Mojang Studios has changed to a single sign-in system for the games we develop and publish. It is important to note that after you migrate a Minecraft account to a Mojang account, you will log into our websites and the game client with your email address and password instead of your username and password. This page can help you troubleshoot various migration issues.
Account Migration Failed
If you receive an error message stating that account migration from a Minecraft to a Mojang account failed, please first make sure that you have typed your information correctly, and that you do not already have a migrated account under the same email address. Also, make sure that you have filled in the correct email address from when you registered your Minecraft account, and try another if you are unsure which one is correct. If you have created a blank Mojang account or have one from purchasing another game, you will need to log into your account and then go to account.mojang.com/migrate/import and migrate your account that way.
Forgot Your Registered Email Address
If you're not able to migrate because you have forgotten the email address you originally used to register your account, we can migrate the account for you if you follow these steps:
- Register a Mojang account with your current email address, if you don't already have one.
- Locate your transaction ID.
- Contact customer support and provide your transaction ID and the email address registered to your Mojang account.
Multiple Accounts on One Email Address
It was previously possible to have multiple Minecraft accounts linked to a single email address. Currently, only one copy of each Mojang Studios game is allowed per migrated account. For people with multiple Minecraft accounts linked to a single email, this means that you will have to choose which account to migrate. If you need to migrate a second paid Minecraft account to a Mojang account, you can do so with a different email and Mojang account.
If Someone has Migrated Your Account for You
If your Minecraft account has been compromised (someone knows your username and password), you would typically restore access by resetting your password. However, if someone has migrated your account to a new Mojang account, you will need to contact Minecraft support for assistance. We can reset the email address on a migrated account back to the original if you are able to provide sufficient verification. For anything else, we will need your transaction ID as proof of account ownership.
You Migrated Your Account but Gift Codes do Not Appear
Due to the way that account migration works, redeemed gift codes purchased before account migration do not currently show in your Mojang account profile. However, they are still viewable under your Minecraft profile, and any unredeemed gift codes will appear on the Mojang account.
If you have questions about gift codes, or anything else related to account migration errors, please contact Minecraft support. Leave us a clear and detailed description of your problem, and steps you have previously tried to fix it, because migration errors can be difficult to pin down.
