Backing up Minecraft worlds

It is recommended to back up your Minecraft worlds to prevent them from being lost. This is especially important if you want to try out an experimental version of Minecraft such as a snapshot or beta.

Minecraft: Java Edition

Backing up Minecraft: Java Edition worlds is as easy as copying the world folders. You can save copies of your world folders on the same computer or store them on any other storage media. For information about where to locate your worlds and how to transfer them, see Transferring Minecraft: Java Edition to another computer

Minecraft (Xbox One, Windows 10, Mobile, Switch and VR)

The easiest way to backup worlds on these devices is to select the pen icon next to the worlds and at the bottom of the settings page select "copy world". This will create a copy of your world that you can keep as a backup.

If you wish to save backups of your worlds on a different device, check out Transferring Minecraft worlds to another device

Depending on your device, the world files can be difficult to access. If you're able to access them and copy them over to a storage media, that is another method for backing up your worlds. To see where your files are stored, please see Where are Minecraft files stored?
