Minecraft NVIDIA RTX FAQ

The Minecraft with RTX beta goes live Thursday April 16th at 10am PT.

GENERAL INFO

HOW DO I ACCESS THE BETA?

To access the Minecraft with RTX beta, follow these instructions if you are not currently on a Minecraft Win 10 Beta. We also have a video that you can view here:  https://youtu.be/VcpNfG_3irw

  1. Install the Xbox Insider Hub app on your PC (it is available for free in the Windows Store)
  2. Inside the app, click on the open box icon in the sidebar on the left
  3. On the Insider content screen, you will see a beta available for Minecraft for Windows 10. Click on the Minecraft for Windows 10 beta
  4. Click the “Join” button at the bottom of the screen
  5. On the following pop-up you will see three radio buttons- one will be for Minecraft RTX Beta, one for Minecraft Beta, one for Unenroll. Choose Minecraft RTX Beta, then click Done.
  6. If you have automatic updates on from the Windows Store, Minecraft will automatically update to the latest RTX beta build available.

Please note that any world you open while on the RTX beta will not be available to be opened in other Minecraft betas OR the non-beta version of the game. We strongly recommend you make a copy of any world you wish to play in the RTX beta and use the copy of the world instead.

If you are already in the Minecraft for Win 10 beta, follow these instructions:

  1. Open the Xbox Insider Hub app
  2. Inside the app, click on the open box icon in the sidebar on the left
  3. On the Insider content screen, you will just see one Minecraft for Win 10 Beta offering under Joined. Click on it.
  4. In this screen, click on Manage.
  5. In the Manage screen, you will have a radio button that will allow you to choose to enroll in the RTX Beta or to Unenroll from the beta program entirely. Select the RTX beta & click on the Done button to the left
  6. You may need to uninstall Minecraft and reinstall it from the store in order to download the RTX beta. Please back up any worlds you wish you keep before uninstalling as otherwise the worlds will be deleted when you uninstall the game. Minecraft saved worlds can be found in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\games\com.mojang\minecraftWorlds – each folder within the minecraftWorlds folder is a world. Please save it somewhere on your PC that is not within the Minecraft directory. You can also export worlds directly from Minecraft to your PC’s desktop.

I HAVE LEFT THE BETA ON THE INSIDER HUB BUT I AM STILL ONLY GETTING THE RTX BETA BUILDS. WHAT DO I DO?

We are aware that some players may have issues leaving the Minecraft RTX Beta. We are working closely with the Xbox Insider Hub team to get this fixed. Thank you for your patience! You can check the progress on our bug tracker site: https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MCPE-33270

You can also try the instructions below after unenrolling and reinstalling Minecraft.

Solution A:
  1. Re-join the Minecraft for Windows 10 Beta (navigate to Insider content > Minecraft for Windows 10 > Join), and select the Group you want to leave.
  2. Once the registration completes, select Manage > Unenroll.
  3. Once the unenroll completes, uninstall and reinstall Minecraft for Windows 10.
Solution B:
  1. From the Search bar on your Windows 10 PC, type “Command Prompt
  2. From the search results, right click on “Command Prompt (Desktop app)
  3. From the context menu, select Run as Administrator.
  4. Select “Yes” if you are prompted with “Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?”
  5. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type powershell and press Enter.
  6. In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type Get-AppxPackage -allusers *minecraftUWP* | remove-appxpackage -allusers and press Enter.
  7. Uninstall and reinstall Minecraft for Windows 10.

HOW DO I KNOW I'M IN THE RIGHT BETA?

In the opening screen of Minecraft where you can see the "play" button, you will see a number in the bottom-right corner of the screen. This is the release number. The release number for the RTX beta is 1.15.0.8 & this number should be on your screen. If it is 1.16, then you are on the Nether beta & need to follow the steps above.

HOW DO I EXPERIENCE RAY TRACING IN THE WINDOWS 10 BETA?

You can download a selection of free creator-built worlds that have been built to make use of ray tracing from the Minecraft Marketplace. Look for content tagged with RTX. You will need a GPU that supports DirectX ray tracing, like NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPUs, to download and play these worlds. You will not be able to turn ray tracing on for every Minecraft world: the toggle is only available in worlds that are ray tracing enabled.

WHY IS THE “DIRECTX RAY TRACING” TOGGLE NOT WORKING?

We are very careful introducing new features that could impact game mechanics. At this time ray tracing cannot be enabled for all world seeds. However, we did want to give our community the ability to create beautiful new experiences with physically based materials resource packs and ray tracing lighting capabilities. To experience ray tracing you can either download a free RTX enabled world from the Marketplace or create your own textures that make use of the physically based rendering system and sideload them into the game.

HOW DO I TURN RAY TRACING ON AND OFF WITHIN A RAY TRACING ENABLED WORLD?

Go to Settings > Advanced Video > DirectX Ray Tracing toggle OR use the semicolon on your keyboard ";" as a hotkey

WHAT ARE THE TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR BEING ABLE TO PLAY MINECRAFT WITH RTX?

To experience Minecraft with RTX, you will need to be playing on Windows 10 PC and using a supported DirectX ray tracing capable GPU like NVIDIA's GeForce RTX GPUs. Windows Phone and VR or MR are not supported. You will also need a CPU Intel Core i5 or equivalent minimum and at least 8 GB of RAM available. You may have to update your Windows operating system and graphics drivers to experience ray tracing .

This beta supports NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 and higher graphics cards.
We recommend installing the latest GeForce Game Ready Driver from NVIDIA.com/drivers for the best gaming experience or by updating to the latest GeForce Game Ready Driver in the NVIDIA GeForce Experience application.

WILL THERE BE A WAY FOR PLAYERS OUTSIDE OF WINDOWS 10 TO BE ABLE TO PLAY MINECRAFT WITH RTX OR SOMETHING SIMILAR?

We’re still working to develop the capabilities of Render Dragon. At this time, Windows 10 with a DirectX ray tracing capable device that meets the minimum requirements is the only supported platform.

WILL MINECRAFT WITH RTX BE FREE?

Yes. Players who own Minecraft for Windows 10 can experience Minecraft with RTX for free via our beta program if they meet the minimum technical requirements.

WHAT LIGHTING AND GRAPHICAL CAPABILITIES DOES RAY TRACING PROVIDE IN MINECRAFT?

The ray tracing enhancements now enable full control of lighting of each individual pixel in texture packs utilizing the additional ray tracing features. We have instructions on how to create textures packs that utilize these features at http://aka.ms/raytracingdocs With control over the depth of each individual pixel, you can further define shadows and textures. You can also experience directional lighting which creates sunbeams that shine through foliage in a forest or cast through a window. It creates the opportunity to cast shadows more accurately in the world and gives materials such as water more realistic behavior. Emissive blocks, such as lava, now glow with more intensity – radiating blooms of light that cast on to adjacent surfaces. In the physical world, light now bounces from object to object and carries indirect color along with it. Now players and creators will be able to experience these subtle changes. These lighting effects enable players and creators to do things such as create a pinhole camera effect that casts light through an object: creating a projection of an image onto another object.

DOES RAY TRACING IMPACT GAMEPLAY OR BEHAVIORS OF MOBS?

We are very careful introducing new features that could impact game mechanics. At this time, ray tracing cannot be enabled for all world seeds. However, we did want to give our community the ability to create beautiful new experiences with physically based materials resource packs and ray tracing lighting capabilities. To experience ray tracing you can either download a free RTX enabled world from the Marketplace or create your own textures that make use of the physically based rendering system and sideload them into the game.. We are still evaluating the impact of bringing ray tracing to any Minecraft world and will provide more details when we are able.

HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT FROM WHAT JAVA MODDERS HAVE BEEN DOING WITH RAY TRACING?

The Java community have made some impressive modifications to the textures and lighting of the Java Edition of the game with mods. This is a source of inspiration for this new work with NVIDIA and Render Dragon. While Java Edition does not natively support ray tracing, this beta introduces native DirectX ray tracing support into Bedrock. We hope to provide this same spark and similar capabilities to the Bedrock community to envision their own point of view and express themselves with ray tracing and their own HD textures.

DOES RAY TRACING CHANGE THE PERFORMANCE OF MINECRAFT?

Yes, performance may change when in a ray tracing enabled world. In the RTX beta, player resolution will be locked to 1080 (but with the upscaling option you may go beyond this), chunk render distance in ray tracing enabled worlds will be set to 8 by default. We’ve also introduced NVIDIA DLSS 2.0, a new “Upscaling” feature that can be turned on in ray tracing enabled worlds to increase performance and support higher resolutions.

WILL RAY TRACING BE COMING TO NON-NVIDIA HARDWARE FOR MINECRAFT?

We do not have any news to share at this time.

CAN I SIDELOAD MY OWN WORLD AND TEXTURES FOR RAY TRACING?

Yes. It is possible to create your own textures that make use of the physically based rendering system. Visit this wiki page to learn more and view documentation. http://aka.ms/raytracingdocs Please note that because this is a beta, we may make changes before the final release so resource packs created in the beta may need to be adjusted in the future. Also, sideloading may cause increased crashes or unexpected issues, so please keep this in mind when sideloading content.

CAN I PLAY REALMS ON THE RTX BETA?

No, Realms are disabled for all Minecraft betas.

CAN I PLAY MULTIPLAYER ON THE RTX BETA?

You can play multiplayer on the RTX beta if you have your internet & game settings as such that you can join other players directly. All players joining must be on the RTX beta.

CAN I IMPORT MY OLD SHADERS INTO THE RTX BETA?

Along with adding ray tracing features, we’ve updated the graphics engine on Windows 10 to the Render Dragon™ graphics engine. Existing community shaders may not be compatible with our new graphics engine.

WHAT IS THE “UPSCALING” TOGGLE?

The upscaling toggle is a performance enhancing toggle that enables NVIDIA DLSS 2.0 to boost frame rates on GeForce RTX graphics cards and support higher than 1080 resolutions.

TROUBLESHOOTING

I’M ON THE WINDOWS 10 BETA FOR RTX (RAY TRACING) AND I TRIED TO PUT MY WORLD FILE ON ANOTHER MACHINE. IT DIDN’T WORK. WHAT’S WRONG?

Worlds opened in the Win 10 beta for RTX cannot be opened in any other Minecraft beta or in the non-beta version. Therefore we recommend you make a copy of any world you want to use before opening it in the RTX beta

I’VE NOTICED SOME THINGS AREN’T WORKING. IS THERE A KNOWN ISSUES LIST?

Yes- you can find it at http://aka.ms/rtxbeta

WHY CAN’T I DOWNLOAD RTX WORLDS FROM THE MARKETPLACE?

Only players who meet the minimum hardware requirements can download RTX enabled worlds from the Marketplace.

THE NVIDIA SITE HAS MY GRAPHICS CARD LISTED AS ONE THAT SUPPORTS RAY TRACING BUT IT’S NOT A RTX 2060 GRAPHICS CARD OR BETTER. WHY DOESN’T IT WORK?

Because of the technology needed to support ray tracing well in Minecraft, we are unable to support NVIDIA cards below a RTX 2060.
