We have not started migrating any accounts yet. We’ll let you know in the launcher when your account is ready to be migrated.
Never enter your account information on any third-party websites.
WHY DO I NEED TO MIGRATE MY ACCOUNT TO A MICROSOFT ACCOUNT?
By increasing account security and adding new safety features to Minecraft, we can better protect you and your account.
When you migrate to a Microsoft account, you will be able to activate two-factor authentication, which makes it much harder for intruders to access your account. We'll also roll out other player safety features over time.
DO I HAVE TO MIGRATE MY MOJANG ACCOUNT TO A MICROSOFT ACCOUNT?
If you use a Mojang account, you will need to migrate to a Microsoft account in order to continue playing Java Edition.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO MY MOJANG ACCOUNT AFTER I MIGRATE TO A MICROSOFT ACCOUNT?
You won’t need it anymore! After migrating you’ll use your Microsoft account to log in to the Minecraft Launcher to play the game and to minecraft.net to manage your settings.
WHAT IF I DON’T WANT TO MIGRATE MY MOJANG ACCOUNT TO A MICROSOFT ACCOUNT? WHAT HAPPENS IF MY MIGRATION PERIOD COMES AND I’M NOT READY TO CHANGE YET?
You’ll have time to migrate – you don’t have to move right when you get the notification. However, when the voluntary migration period ends, you’ll need to move your account or risk having it closed.
CAN I MIGRATE MY LEGACY MINECRAFT ACCOUNT TO A MICROSOFT ACCOUNT?
Not right now. We’ll have a solution for this soon, but in the meantime, you can keep using your legacy Minecraft account to log in.
WHAT IS A LEGACY MINECRAFT ACCOUNT AND HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE ONE?
Legacy Minecraft accounts were used back in 2010-2012. You know you have one if you log in with a username instead of an email address.
WHAT ARE YOU CHANGING ABOUT MINECRAFT: JAVA EDITION? ARE YOU PHASING OUT THIS VERSION AND TO ONLY SUPPORT THE CONSOLE EDITIONS?
Don’t worry – the only thing that’s changing is how you log in to the game!
We’re only moving Mojang accounts to Microsoft accounts, which gives you access to new security features. Minecraft: Java Edition will stay exactly the same, and we’ll continue to update and support it in the future.
DOES HAVING A MICROSOFT ACCOUNT ENABLE ME TO PLAY WITH MY FRIENDS ON OTHER PLATFORMS?
No. If you play Java Edition, you can still only play with other players who have Java Edition.
I CAN NOT LOG IN TO MY MOJANG ACCOUNT WITH MY EMAIL ADDRESS AND PASSWORD, OR I THINK MY ACCOUNT HAS BEEN COMPROMISED
You should first try to log in with your last known username or email and password. If you’re still unable to log in, or if you think your account has been compromised, please get in touch with Minecraft Support.
Make sure you have your original transaction ID to share with our team. If you do not have it, please be prepared to answer additional security questions.
HOW DO I MIGRATE MY MOJANG ACCOUNT TO A MICROSOFT ACCOUNT? CAN I DO IT RIGHT NOW?
We will let you know on your profile page on Minecraft.net and in the Minecraft launcher when your account is ready to be migrated. If you’ve been notified that you’re eligible, you can just click the announcement to migrate.
If you can’t find the announcement on Minecraft.net or in the Minecraft launcher, you’ll have to wait a bit longer —– but we’ll let you know when it’s your turn!
The migration process consists of five easy steps:
- Click the announcement to migrate
- Sign in to an existing Microsoft account, or create a new Microsoft account if you don’t already have one
- Set up your Xbox.com profile —– don’t worry, you don’t need an Xbox for this!
- Confirm your migration to a Microsoft account
- Done! You can now play Minecraft: Java Edition with your Microsoft account
WHAT IS COPIED OVER FROM MY MOJANG ACCOUNT WHEN I MIGRATE? WHAT ABOUT MY WORLDS AND CONTENT? WHAT ABOUT MY CAPES?
All the information in your Mojang account will transfer over, including your in-game username, worlds, content, and capes.
AFTER MIGRATING, WILL I BE ABLE TO PLAY MINECRAFT: JAVA EDITION AND THE WINDOWS VERSION OF BEDROCK WITH THE SAME ACCOUNT?
If you migrate your Mojang account to a Microsoft account that has been used to play Bedrock (on any platform), then yes —– you’ll be able to access both games with that account.
WHAT IF I ALREADY HAVE A MICROSOFT ACCOUNT?
When you start the migration process, you will be able to sign in to your existing Microsoft account and migrate your Mojang account to it.
CAN I LINK MULTIPLE MOJANG ACCOUNTS TO A SINGLE MICROSOFT ACCOUNT OR DO I NEED SEPARATE MICROSOFT ACCOUNTS FOR EACH OF MY MOJANG ACCOUNTS?
You will need to migrate each Mojang account to a separate Microsoft account, the same way players use a different email address per Mojang account today.
We’ve built a new account switching functionality into the Minecraft launcher to make it easy to manage multiple accounts and play sessions.
DO I GET TO KEEP MY MINECRAFT: JAVA EDITION USERNAME?
Yes, you will be able to keep your in-game username for Java Edition.
During the account migration process, you’ll also need to pick an Xbox Gamertag. This might differ from your Minecraft: Java Edition username, if that one was already taken or if it doesn’t meet the Gamertag character requirements.
WILL THIRD-PARTY LAUNCHERS CONTINUE TO WORK?
We’re working on a solution for third-party launchers, and we’ll keep you up to date.

I PLAY SINGLE PLAYER OR ON A LOCAL NETWORK. WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN TO MY ACCOUNT?
The only thing that will change is how you’ll log in to Minecraft!
