How to Purchase Minecraft: Java Edition with a Microsoft Account

When purchasing Minecraft: Java Edition you will now be prompted to sign up with a Microsoft Secured Account (MSA).

Since we are finally moving in with the rest of the Minecraft family, we have a helpful guide to get started with your new account, and some FAQs at the bottom to answer any questions you may have!

Once you have selected Minecraft: Java Edition and your operating system, click “BUY MINECRAFT. You can click here to jump right to this page.

Once you do that you should be prompted to sign-in to or sign-up for a Microsoft account.

Follow the prompts to set up or login to an existing Microsoft account and complete your purchase. Once you have purchased the game you can continue to set up your Minecraft profile and username.

Once you complete this you can download the launcher, login to your Microsoft account, and start your adventure in Java Edition!

Q: Can I use my existing Microsoft account to buy Minecraft: Java Edition?

A: Yes! You can link your existing Microsoft account to your new purchase during the purchasing process.

Q: Why can’t I use my work or school email to sign up for a Microsoft account?

A: Microsoft accounts cannot use any temporary emails which includes Work or School email accounts. In the event you lose access to that email you would lose access to your Microsoft account.

Q: Can I have multiple Minecraft: Java accounts linked to one Microsoft account?

A: No, each Microsoft account can only have one Java account linked to it.

Q: I created a Microsoft account for migration, but I am prompted to buy the game. Why can’t I migrate?

A: The migration hasn’t started yet; only new purchases will currently be linked to Microsoft accounts. Don’t worry, we will let everyone know when it is their time to move on over!

Q: What do I do if the Gamertag I want isn’t available?

If the Gamertag you want isn’t available, you will have to pick another. However, this is not the name you will see in-game. Your Minecraft Username will be the name used in-game and you can set this after setting up your Gamertag and Microsoft account. You can find the differences between Gamertag and Username here.
