Accessibility Settings for Minecraft: Java Edition

We believe everyone should be empowered and enabled to play Minecraft. This article will focus on options available in the Java edition of Minecraft – which includes Mac, Windows, and Linux platforms.

Minecraft Accessibility Menu 

Minecraft includes an Accessibility Settings screen for easy access to accessibility settings. To view this screen select the Accessibility icon on the start menu, which is located to the right of the Quit Game button.  You can also select Options and then Accessibility Settings from the start screen or the pause screen in-game.    

The following settings can be found in Accessibility Settings. 

Accessible Menu Navigation and Narration 

All versions of Minecraft (using English as a language) include the ability to navigate the menus in an accessible way using a keyboard.  We are working to add support for more languages soon. 


  • Use tab keys to navigate all menus  
  • Use the Escape key as a shortcut to go back to the previous selection or close the current screen. 


  • Click the Narrator toggle to choose your narration mode 
  • Narrates All 
  • Narrates Chat 
  • Narrates System
  • Open the Audio settings screen and use the Voice/Speech toggle to adjust the volume of the Narrator 


  • Use the Show Subtitles toggle to turn on subtitles that show the type and direction of sounds 

Text Background and Spacing 

  • Use the Text Background toggle to chose which text will have a background added 
    • Everywhere 
    • Chat 
  • Use Text Background Opacity slider to adjust the opacity of backgrounds added to text 
  • Use the Line Spacing slider to adjust the spacing between lines of text 
  • Use the Chat Delay slider to determine how long chat messages persist 


  • Use the Auto-Jump toggle to enable this feature 

Action Toggles 

Use the action toggles to allow certain actions to be toggled on and off instead of requiring a continuous hold by the player. 

  • Sneak 
  • Sprint 

Effects Sliders 

Use the effect sliders to adjust the intensity of certain effects 

  • Distortion Effects 
  • FOV Effects 

Other Accessibility Settings

Chat Settings 

There are a variety of options to change the appearance of chat text. 

Click the Chat Settings option in the main Settings screen to view access the Chat Settings menu and change how the chat font appears.  Settings include: 

  • Chat mode toggle 
  • Shown 
  • Commands only 
  • Hidden 
  • Colors toggle 
  • Weblinks toggle 
  • Chat text opacity 
  • Text background opacity 
  • Text size 
  • Line Spacing 
  • Chat Delay 
  • Width 
  • Focused Hight 
  • Unfocused Height 
  • Narrator toggle 
  • Command suggestions toggle 

Music & Sound Options 

The audio controllers have been designed to give players more granularity when it comes to customizing their in-game audio experience.   To access these settings, select Audio on the main Settings page, and use the sliders to adjust the volume for a wide variety of different audio channels. 

Re-Map Controls

The Controls screen offers multiple ways to re-map mouse and keyboard controls to allow players to configure gameplay to best suit their needs.   

Minecraft Launcher 

The Minecraft Launcher includes audio cues to help players navigate the login and launch experience. To enable audio cues on the Minecraft Launcher, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+B. You should hear a sparkle ringing sound to confirm that the sound is enabled. 

Tips on Navigating the Minecraft Launcher 

If you have previously logged in and sound is enabled, follow these steps to launch Minecraft Java Edition: 

  • After starting the Launcher, you will hear a positive sound from a Villager indicating that you have now successfully entered the Launcher 
  • Press Enter to launch Minecraft Java Edition. 
  • Game music will indicate that Minecraft Java Edition has loaded. 

If you are not logged in and sound is enabled, follow these steps to login and launch Minecraft Java Edition: 

  • Initial focus will be on the email/username text box. 
  • Enter your email/username. 
  • Press Tab to move to the password text box. 
  • Enter your password. 
  • Press Enter to Login. If the credentials are not valid, you will hear a negative sound from a Villager. Your focus will be reset to the email/username field to retry your login. If the credentials are valid, you will hear a positive sound from a Villager indicating that you have now successfully entered the Launcher. 
  • Focus will be on the Launch button, and you can press Enter to start the game. 
  • Game music will indicate that Minecraft Java Edition has loaded.
