How to Migrate Your Child’s Mojang Account to a Microsoft Account (Instructions for Parent/Guardian)

With the migration from Mojang accounts to Microsoft accounts, we know it may be difficult to navigate the migration process. We have created multiple guides depending on your account type and needs. This article is lengthy so first let's break down what is in each section. Click below to jump to the section relevant to your situation.

WARNING: ONCE YOU MIGRATE YOUR ACCOUNT THIS ACTION CAN NOT BE UNDONE. ENSURE YOU ARE MIGRATING TO THE CORRECT MICROSOFT ACCOUNT BEFORE COMPLETING THE MIGRATION.

 

How to Migrate your Child’s Mojang Account to a Microsoft Account (Instructions for Parent/Guardian)

Child Needs a New Microsoft Account

If your child needs to create a new Microsoft account, please follow these steps to migrate your Mojang account.

  1. Login to minecraft.net with your child’s Mojang account and find the prompt IT’S YOUR TURN TO MOVE! on your profile page and click MOVE MY ACCOUNT. The launcher message about migration will also redirect you to the profile page.

  2. You will need to verify your email by receiving a code to the email currently on your Mojang account. Click GET CODE and check your email for the confirmation code.

  3. Enter the code in the box shown and click SUBMIT AND START MIGRATION.

  4. From here you will be prompted to create a Microsoft account using the email from your Mojang account if one does not exist already. If you would like to use a different email to sign-up for your Microsoft account, click Use another account.

  5. You will then be prompted to create a password for your child’s Microsoft account.

  6. Enter your country and your child’s date of birth.

  7. You will see a prompt that says You’re going to need a parent for this. Click next.

  8. Enter the parent/guardian’s email address and click Send Email. An email will be sent notifying the parent/guardian of the migration. Once the parent/guardian is available click My parent can sign in now.

  9. The parent/guardian will then be prompted to log in to, or create, a Microsoft account. Please note that you will be unable to use a work or school email address.

    1. If the parent/guardian already has a Microsoft account you can log in to it here and skip to step 9.2.4
    2. If the parent/guardian does not have a Microsoft account click Create one! A parent/guardian must have their own Microsoft account if your child is underage. (Keep in mind this information should belong to the parent/guardian and not the child)
      1. Enter the email address to use for the parental account and click Next.

      2. Create a strong password and click Next.

      3. Enter your country and date of birth and click Next.

      4. Review our legal information and continue.

      5. You will be prompted to allow your child to sign into third-party apps. Make sure this box is checked and click Continue.

      6. The parental account has been created and linked to the child account. Click Done to continue the migration.

  10. You will be prompted to log in once more. Use the email and password from the child’s Microsoft account (Created in steps 4-5).

  11. After logging in you will be prompted to pick a Gamertag. This will only be used for Xbox services and will not replace your Minecraft username.

  12. You should be prompted to COMPLETE MOVE. Clicking this will finalize the migration process and bring you back to your profile page.

  13. Migration is complete! You now will use your Microsoft account to log in for Minecraft: Java Edition.

  14. When you restart the launcher for the first time after migration, you may be taken to the Mojang login screen, or a screen still asking you to migrate. Please use the 'Go Back' button OR the 'X' (depending on which of the below screens you see) to get back to the login selection screen. You will then select 'Microsoft Login' to enter your new credentials.

IMPORTANT If your child’s Minecraft account has an active Realm Subscription you must turn on Realms access in order to keep using it. You can visit our FAQ on How to Manage Parental Consent, Family Settings and Realms/Multiplayer Access for a Child Account for more information. If you do not set this up, you will not be able to access your Realm.

Child Has Pre-Existing Microsoft Account

If your child has a pre-existing Microsoft account, please follow these steps to migrate your Mojang account.

  1. Login to minecraft.net with your child’s Mojang account and find the prompt IT’S YOUR TURN TO MOVE! on your profile page and click MOVE MY ACCOUNT. The launcher message about migration will also redirect you to the profile page.

  3. Enter the code in the box shown and click SUBMIT AND START MIGRATION.

  4. From here you will be prompted to log in to your child's pre-existing Microsoft account.
    • If your child already has a Microsoft account using the same email used for their Mojang account it will automatically detect the account, select the correct account from the list and log in.

    • If your child already has a Microsoft account but the email is different than the email on your Mojang account, select Use another account and log in to that Microsoft account instead of creating a new one.

  5. After logging into your child's Microsoft account you will see a prompt that says You’re going to need a parent for this. Click next.

  6. Enter the parent/guardian’s email address and click Send Email. An email will be sent notifying the parent/guardian of the migration. Once the parent/guardian is available click My parent can sign in now.
