How to Migrate a Legacy Minecraft Account to a Microsoft Account

With the migration from Mojang accounts to Microsoft accounts, we know there are some players who never migrated to a Mojang account way back in 2012. If you log into the game using your Username, this guide is for you!

Below is a walkthrough on how to migrate your legacy Minecraft account to a Microsoft account.

Already have a Mojang account (login with email)? See our guide for migrating Mojang accounts to Microsoft accounts.

WARNING: ONCE YOU MIGRATE YOUR ACCOUNT THIS ACTION CAN NOT BE UNDONE. ENSURE YOU ARE MIGRATING TO THE CORRECT MICROSOFT ACCOUNT BEFORE COMPLETING THE MIGRATION.

Migrating from a Legacy Minecraft account to a PRE-EXISTING Microsoft account

  1. Login to your launcher by selecting Mojang Account and enter your Username where it asks for Email. Enter your password and log in.

  9.  You will then be met with a Microsoft log in screen. Once you have entered the correct email address you will be prompted to complete the log in with your Microsoft account password. MAKE SURE TO SELECT OR SIGN IN TO THE RIGHT MICROSOFT ACCOUNT, AS LINKING TO THE WRONG ACCOUNT IS PERMANENT.

  10. If you do not already have a Gamertag set up, you will be prompted to create one. Note: This will not replace your Minecraft Username. Gamertags will not display in-game but will display on your Microsoft account information.

  11. Once you have linked a Microsoft account and set up your Gamertag, you are almost done with the migration process. Click COMPLETE MOVE to finalize your migration.

    1. When you restart the launcher for the first time after migration, you may be taken to the Mojang login screen, or a screen still asking you to migrate.
    2. Please use the 'Go Back' button OR the 'X' (depending on which of the below screens you see) to get back to the login selection screen. You will then select 'Microsoft Login' to enter your new credentials.
