How to Change Online Chat Settings for Minecraft: Java Edition

While playing Minecraft: Java Edition with other players online, you may want to customize your online chat experience. This article will discuss where to go to change your online chat setting, and what each setting means so you can have full control over your Minecraft: Java Edition online chat experience.

How to find and change your Minecraft: Java Edition online chat settings

As you may know, you need a Microsoft Account to play Minecraft: Java Edition. Because of this connection, your Minecraft: Java Edition online chat settings are found in your Xbox Live account settings, as online chat services and online Minecraft gameplay are powered by Xbox Live.

To change the Minecraft: Java Edition chat experience, click on the Privacy tab on the top of the page. Scroll down to the Others can: section, and find the Others can communicate with voice, text or invites option.

From here, you’ll find the following options. However, Minecraft: Java Edition has no distinction between ‘Friends’ or ‘Everyone.’ Instead, you must choose between ‘Block’ to block all chat in Minecraft: Java Edition, or ‘Everyone’ to enable chat in the game.

Everyone Your account can receive all text chat and receive all invites from anyone in Minecraft: Java Edition.
Friends  Your account can receive all text chat and receive all invites from anyone on your Friends list in Minecraft: Java Edition.
Block  Your account will not receive any text chat or receive any invites from anyone in Minecraft: Java Edition.

Note: If you created a Microsoft Account during our migration process from Mojang to Microsoft Accounts, it is likely that your chat setting will default to Block

If you’re still having trouble with Minecraft: Java Edition chat, be sure to contact Minecraft Support for additional assistance.
